Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, a country where nature, history and traditions coexist in a unique balance. Travelling here means discovering landscapes that are constantly changing, offering ever-different emotions.
Bali combines spirituality, adventure and relaxation thanks to its temples, terraced rice fields and beaches, making it one of the country's most iconic destinations. Java, the historical and cultural heart of Indonesia, is home to treasures such as the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, as well as spectacular volcanoes such as Monte Bromo. Lovers of wild nature will be enchanted by the forests of Sumatra, home to orangutans, and unique landscapes such as Lake Toba.
Moving eastwards, Komodo Island and Flores offer exciting encounters with the legendary Komodo dragons and turquoise waters ideal for snorkelling. Sulawesi fascinates with the traditions of the Toraja people and extraordinary coral reefs, while remote West Papua offers the unique experience of Raja Ampat, considered one of the best diving destinations in the world. Visiting Indonesia means discovering a country that combines unspoilt nature, ancient culture and a surprising variety of travel experiences.
In general, the best time to visit Indonesia is during the dry season, from April to October. However, the climate can vary depending on the different areas of the archipelago: Lombok and Flores: the ideal period is between June and September. Bali and Java: from April to October. Sumatra and Papua: between May and September. Borneo: from June to October. These months are the best for enjoying sunny days, calm seas and optimal conditions for excursions and diving.
The main and most frequently used international airports for travelling to Indonesia depend greatly on the destination (Bali, Java, Sumatra, etc.). Here are the most important ones:
Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) – Denpasar, Bali This is the busiest airport for tourist travel. Direct connections from many Asian cities (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo) and some European and Australian cities. Java Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) – Jakarta Indonesia's main international hub and a major hub for intercontinental flights. Many domestic flights to all the islands depart from here. A growing airport is Lombok International Airport (LOP) – Lombok, which offers international connections to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Ngurah Rai remains the most popular gateway for leisure travel. Italian citizens do not need a visa for stays of less than 30 days. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months upon entry into the country and have two blank pages.
Indonesia is also an amazing destination for families: spectacular natural landscapes, quiet beaches, a welcoming population and numerous activities suitable for children make the trip enjoyable and stimulating for the whole family. Bali is the ideal island for those travelling with children thanks to well-organised tourist services, well-equipped accommodation facilities and safe beaches where you can relax or enjoy activities such as snorkelling in calm waters. Java offers the opportunity to enjoy interesting cultural experiences by visiting temples and volcanoes, while a stay in Sumatra or Borneo can turn into an exciting adventure, observing orangutans up close in nature parks. In Komodo, children can enjoy an unforgettable adventure encountering the legendary Komodo dragons. It is important to consider the distances involved, as transfers can often be long. Carefully planning your stops and choosing destinations with good infrastructure allows you to organise your trip according to your family's pace and experience Indonesia in a peaceful and safe way.
To travel to Indonesia, the yellow fever vaccine is mandatory for all travellers over 9 months of age coming from countries at risk of transmitting the disease. It is advisable to consult your doctor before departure and to check the recommended vaccinations by consulting the official CDC – Travel Health website.
Indonesia is generally safe for travellers, but it is advisable to remain vigilant in public places, crowded areas and major tourist destinations. It is also advisable to avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, especially at weekends, on Fridays (prayer day) and during religious festivals or celebrations, particularly those inspired by non-local traditions.
